Applying for a mountaineering course in India

Mountaineering is something which one can start believing in only after experiencing it. There are many institutes which offer courses in trekking and mountaineering and other adventure sports. Your entry into the world of mountaineering depends on the mountaineering courses you take along. Mountaineering institutes in India differ in their popularity. Some of these institutes have waiting times going up to 2 years while some accept you within 2-3 months of receiving your application. The training methodology however remains the same. 

Here is a list of mountaineering institutes in India.

Nehru Institute Of Mountaineering (NIM), Uttarkashi

Courses Offered:

  • Basic Mountaineering Course
  • Advance Mountaineering Course
  • Method of Instruction
  • Search and Rescue

Eligibility:

  • For BMC : You must be 18-25 years old and must have exercised (full body) for 3 months before the course, running atleast 15kms per day
    (uphill) in order to pass the medical test.
  • You must have an ‘A’ grade in BMC from any certified mountaineering institute.
  • You must have an ‘A’ grade in AMC to apply for MOI or Search and Rescue

How to apply in NIM
Contact the institute to know the availibility of seats for your preferred course. Fill in the application form and medical certificate from a certified doctor. Prepare a DD in favour of the name mentioned in the application form and send it through post to the institute.

 

HMI, Darjeeling

Courses Offered:

  • Basic Mountaineering Course (BMC)
  • Advance Mountaineering Course (AMC)
  • Search and Rescue Course
  • Methods of Instruction Course (MOI)
  • Course for visually challenged persons and underprivileged sections of society
  • Special Course
  • Mountaineering Refresher course
  • Short Term Adventure Course

Eligibility:
A trainee should be able to communicate, read and understand either Hindi or English.

  • AMC: Trainees graded ‘A’ in BMC from HMI Darjeeling, NIM Uttarkashi, JIM Pahalgam, NIMAS Dirang, ABVIMAS Manali and SGMI Gangtok are eligible to apply for this Course
  • Search & Rescue and Methods of Instruction Course : Trainees graded ‘A’ in AMC can apply for both the course. For MOI, a trainee should have passed Class-XII
  • Mountaineering Refresher Course : Trainee should have completed BMC with any grade.
  • For all other courses, age limit & physical fitness are the only eligibility criteria.

How to Apply in HMI:
Seats are alloted on ‘First Come First Serve Basis’. Course aspirants should check with HMI Training Office for seat availability and apply only for courses in which seat is available. Application form along with Medical Certificate, Course fee & proof of date of birth is to be sent to HMI by post/courier.

 

Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Mountaineering and Allied Sports (ABVIMAS), Manali

  • BMC
  • AMC
  • MOI
  • Special BMC
  • Special AMC

How to Apply and eligibility
To apply , you first need to select the month which is favourable for you. In order to book your seat you need to send the application  form and all other necessary documents at least 45days prior to the commencement of the course, which is available on the ABVIMAS website in a prospectus doc., which also includes all the other necessary details as well. After this, you must send a DD in favour of the institute, take a photocopy of the DD form/receipt and then attach it with your form and documents and post it to the institute. As soon as the institute receives the form and the money they’ll send you a confirmation email regarding the same.

 

The Jawahar Institute of Mountaineering and Winter Sports (JIM & WS), Pahalgam

Courses Offered:

  • Basic Mountaineering Course
  • Advance Mountaineering course
  • MOI
  • Search and Rescue

Eligibility:
For BMC : You must be 18-25  years old and must have exercised (full body) for 3 months before the course, running atleast 15kms per day

National Institute of Mountaineering and Allied Sports (NIMAS), Arunachal Pradesh

Courses Offered:

  • Method of Instruction course
  • Search and Rescue course
  • Advance Mountaineer Course
  • Basic Mountaineering Course
  • Expedition Course (Above 6000m in Arunachal Pradesh) (NIMAS TRG AREA)
  • Several other adventure courses on Paragliding, rafting, etc.

Eligibility:
The institute has a suggested fitness chart and a medical form which can be accessed on their website.

How to apply in NIMAS

    • Seats are allotted on a FIRST COME FIRST SERVE basis.
    • All NIMAS course forms are available online. You can either pay online or issue a demand draft in the institute’s name, payable at SBI, Dirang Branch, Arunachal Pradesh.
    • Unless there’s a valid medical reason, transfer of vacancy is not allowed by the institute.
    • A basic level of physical fitness is a must. The ideal would be the ability to walk for 3 to 4 Km with additional weight of 20 kilos.
    • Training Fee should be remitted through a Bank Draft. The fee can also be paid through NEFT /RTGS.

With a list of these institutes and an awareness of your experience level, you can choose to apply at multiple institutes and wait for a response from more than one of them. It’s always better to keep following up with the institute regarding your application to have a clearer picture.
