About Kanamo Peak Trek

Going close to 6,000 m within 3-4 days with a decent acclimatization was something few people knew of. Several ascents of Kanamo in the last decade coupled with pics floating on social media have made it one of the most popular treks in Spiti. If you are looking for one high-altitude trek and don’t have sufficient time for Stok Gangri, then Kanamo peak trek could be your best bet. Kanamo is also called as the ”White Lady”, where ‘Ka’ means White and ‘Namo’ means a Lady.

Altitude: 19,553 Ft.
Base Camp: Kibber village, Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh.
Difficulty level: Difficult

Starting point:

To start this trek one has to reach Kibber (185 Km from Manali) which is located in the Spiti valley of Himachal Pradesh. One can drive to Kibber from Manali. The route crosses through Rohtang Pass and it takes 9-10 hours to reach. Cabs are also available from Manali to Kibber (Rs.3000-4000 depending on the time of the day and seasons). One can also take a bus from Manali to reach Kaza (Rs.250) and then hire a taxi from there to Kibber.

Day 01: Drive from Manali to kibber (185.5km; 9-10 hrs)

The roads from Manali to kibber are poor, and it takes about 9-10 hrs to reach. Kibber is known as one of the highest inhabited villages in the world. There are multiple cafes/ restaurants available on this route. One can also visit Ki monastery on the way and can rest at Kibber in the night; accommodation is available in homestays.

Day 02: Explore Kibber (4,270 m) and acclimatize

One will spend the day exploring Kibber to get accustomed with the altitude and the weather, and also to get the sense of Kibber’s culture and habitat. One should go for walk around the village and get themselves adjusted with the weather. There are homestays available in Kibber for accommodation.

 Day 03: Trek from Kibber to Kanamo basecamp (4270m to 4780m; 6.5Km; 6-7 hrs)

The third day is when the actual trek begins. One will come across two lakes on the way, one of which sources water to Kaza town. The path is of moderate level of difficulty. The ascent is steep for first few hours but later the path is an easy walk. Just 1 Km before the basecamp one comes across a variety of flowers, and the view is picturesque. Overnight stay in Kanamo basecamp, there are many points where one can set up their tents.

Day 04: Trek from Kanamo basecamp to Kanamo peak and back to basecamp (4780m to 5960m; 5-6km; 9-10hrs)

The fourth day of the trek is the most difficult day.One has to start early and should have had a heavy breakfast. On this day two shoulders in the mountain will be crossed, and the path is a continuous ascent to the peak. The last few hours will involve trekking on Scree.

One needs to be very careful while walking on these paths. Once on top, one will realize that all the hardwork paid off. An ecstatic 360 degree view of the Himalayas, wherein one can view Pin Parvati pass, Ranges of Kinnaur, Parang la pass leading to Ladakh, Lahaul and spiti. After taking in the beauty, one starts to descend back to the basecamp. Overnight stay in Kanamo basecamp.

Day 05: Trek from Kanamo Basecamp to kibber (4780m to 4300m; 6.5Km; 6-7 hrs)

One will trek back to kibber on the same way they took on day 3. After a long trek, one can again go around kibber village. There is an alternative option of driving to Kaza from Kibber, if one wants to visit the beautiful places in and around Kaza. One needs to stay Overnight at Kibber/Kaza.

Day 06: Drive to Manali from kibber (185.5km; 9-10 hrs)

After breakfast one can start their drive back to Manali. It’ll be 5-6 hrs journey and at Manali the trek ends.

Landscape: One will come across a variety of flowers, and will be able to get an amazing view of Kinnaur-Lahaul-spiti area from the peak. Crossing streams and snow path one will also see many ranges from the top point of the trek. It is mixed ground of snow and boulder moraine.

Best season for Kanamo trek:

June last week to October first week is considered as the best time to visit Kanamo Peak trek.

Cellular connectivity:

Airtel and Vodafone will have signal up to Gulaba village before Rohtang Pass. BSNL is available in Spiti valley. After Kibber, hoping for network is a waste. It is very hard to gain signal in these remote areas of Himalaya, yet one can hope for some signal in BSNL mobiles at some points.
