About Green Lake Trek

Green Lake trek is near Lachen and it is nestled amidst an amazing view of the Kanchenjunga and other glorious Himalayan peaks. It is located at an altitude of 5050 m with a medium to high level of difficulty.

Starting Point of Green Lake Trek:

The Sikkim Green Lake trek begins from Lachen in North Sikkim. Reach Gangtok and take a local taxi towards Lachen. You’ll have to reach Bagdogra Airport or New Jalpaiguri Railway Station and drive to Sikkim’s capital Gangtok by taxi or jeep.  Along the drive, the gurgling Teesta River and the mountain ranges will surely mesmerize you with their immaculate beauty.

Route and itinerary:

Day 01:

Gangtok to Lachen (2,700m; 5-6 hr drive)

Today you will take a drive from Gangtok to Lachen, a small town in North Sikkim. On this journey, you will see various points of interest such as the Tashi View Point, Phodong Monastery, Kabi Longstok, Mangan and Chungthang with a lunch break at Mangan. You can reach Lachen by evening and stay overnight at a hotel.


Day 02:

Lachen to Zema (20 min drive) then Zema to Talem (3,240m; 5-6 hr trek)

The trek begins from Zema which is a 20-minute drive from Lachen. You can expect boulders and rhododendron thickets on the way that lead to Zemu River. After climbing through the forest to reach Talem, you can have lunch. You can explore the region and spend the night in tents.


Day 03:

Talem to Jakthang (3,300m; 4-5 hr trek)

Today’s trek will be quite an easy walk that you can cover in a short time. You can view exotic varieties of colourful rhododendrons. You will then reach the Jakthang campsite, where you can stay overnight in tents.


Day 04:

Jakthang to Yabuk (3,850m; 4-5 hr trek)

Begin your day from Jakthang and head towards Yabuk through the rhododendron forests and streams. It is a well-laid trail that takes you to Zemu Glacier. After trekking for some time, you will finally reach Yabuk.



Day 05:

Yabuk to Rest Camp (4,500m; 5-6 hr trek)

Today will be a difficult trek through rough pebbles and boulders towards the Rest Camp. You can view the mind-blowing peaks of Mt Siniolchu and Simvo during this challenging trek. Upon reaching the Rest Camp, settle down in tents for an overnight stay.



Day 06:

Rest Camp to Green Lake (5,050m; 5-6 hr trek)

Today you will trek towards the famous Green Lake. You can expect a few tricky terrains and challenges along the way. Stay overnight in the plains beside the lake.


Day 07:

Stay at Green Lake

Explore the amazing surroundings of the lake and spend the night at Green Lake camp.


Day 08:

Green Lake to Yabuk (3,850m; 5-6 hr trek)

Today you will be trekking back to Yabuk. Trek downhill to reach the Yabuk campsite for an overnight stay.



North Sikkim is one of the least explored destinations in the country and Green Lake is a wonderful gem there. It provides mesmerizing views of the scenic lakes, lofty mountains, colourful meadows, rich flora and dense forests, it truly proves to be a paradise for the visitors. The winding road that leads to this stunning lake which is infused with a large variety of rhododendrons that are breathtaking.


Best time for Green Lake Trek:

April to May and October till November.
