About Hampta Pass Trek

The Hampta Pass Trek is located in the Pir Panjal range in Himachal Pradesh on a height of 4277 m and has a medium level of difficulty. This trek definitely leaves you in awe with its landscapes.

Starting point of Hampta Pass Trek:

Manali is the basecamp for this trek. One has to reach Jobra from Manali to start this trek. Jobra is around 30-45 minutes drive from Manali, depending on traffic in the main town. Allain Guhugal Hydel Project site popularly known as Hampta Dam in Jobra is the starting point.

Route and itinerary:
Day 01: Manali to Chika via Jobra (2987 m to3078 m; 2hr. drive from Manali to Jobra then 2 km trek from Jobra to Chika)

The route has an easy to moderate trail. On foot the trekking initiates from Allain Guhugal Hydel Project junction through Pine forests. A variety of trees like maple, deodar, toss and oak providing a sight that soothe your eyes. Upon reaching there will be overnight camping at Chika as it is huge, spacious and green.

Day 02: Chika to BalukaGhera Via Jwara (3078 m to 3627 m; 8.5 km; 6 hr. trek)

There is a moderate trail with gradual ascent. You will go through a river crossing, boulder walk and colorful tiny flowers on the way. There is an entire stretch of amazing dwarf Rhododendron trees at lower and the central region and cluster of silver birch trees cover up the upper region. Enjoy the camp site.

Day 03: Balu ka Ghera to Siagoru (3627 m to 4297 m (Hampta Pass) to 3931 m; 7 km; 10 hr. trek)

The first 1 hour is gradual ascent then there is steep ascent till the Hampta Pass which offers an amazing view of tiny yellow and orange flowers along the river. Then there is around 2 hours of steep descent and 1 hours of flat walk from the Hampta Pass to campsite. You’ll be able to spot Deo Tibba Peak and Spiti on your way to Campsite. This is the coldest place of the trek. You can rest in tents overnight.

Day 04: Shea Goru to Chatru and drive to Chandratal (3931 m to 3352 m; 7 km; 5 hr trek)

There is gradual descent on moraine. Be careful as the trail might sometime lead you to edges of mountains and ridges. You will pass Chandra River and few glaciers on your way. Drive to Chandratal and back to camp site. Camp overnight at Chatru which is a consensus of the three passes, Hampta, Rohtang and Spiti.

Day 5: Chatru to Manali via Rohtang Pass (85 km; 5-6 hr drive)

Rohtang pass road is a very busy route; driving time may increase due to of heavy traffic.


The variation in the trails is enormous; scenic landscapes, open green pastures and meadows, glacial valleys, easy access and an exceptional, adventurous and hair raising crossing of the pass makes this trekking expedition to Hampta pass an exciting one. The green cover of Deodar and Oak changes dramatically once you reach Lahaul. The terrain is very rocky for the descent and one must be alert to avoid any injuries.

Best season for Hampta Pass Trek:

The best time to trek to Hampta Pass is from mid-June to mid-October. There are chances to witness some snow on the high passes in the early days of the season and then it melts down completely by August.

There will be no mobile networks on the trek route.You will find one landline phone in Chatru in a guest house located there.
