Winter Layering techniques to stay warm

What are the three winter layers to be considered?

  • The base layer: This is the very first layer and closest to your skin. The purpose of this layer is to extract the sweat out of your body so that it does not feel cold.
  • The middle layer: This is the very next layer after the base layer. The middle layer is important as it assists in maintaining the body temperature by ensuring that the heat of the body is not extracted. It ensures that the body remains warm during winters.
  • The outer layer: This layer is farthest from your skin and it is in direct contact with the cold wind. This layer acts as a shield as does not let wind to get inside the body.

 What a winter base layer should look like?

The base layer in like your second skin which protects your from moisture retention and removes it from the body. While choosing a base layer garment following points should be kept in mind.

  1. A lightweight garment for moderate temperature, midweight for cool and heavyweight for frosting temperature.
  2. There are certain specifications that should be kept in mind while choosing a fabric for your base layer like, the sweat absorbing capacity, odor detention, and resilience of the fabric.
  3. The Fabrics that can be used for a based layer are merino wool, Synthetic fabrics like polyester or nylon, ceramic wool and silk can be used for a base layer.
  4. If you do not prefer any of these fabrics then it could be a DIY material but keep in mind that the ultimate role of this layer is to manage your body’s moisture.

Lightweight middle layer – Winter midlayer

A middle layer helps you to maintain the warmth of your body by protecting the heat of the body. It is important to choose a perfect middle layer while you are on a trek. It can also be called as the insulating layer.

  1. Most appropriately a fleece jacket should be the best fabric that can be worn as a middle layer while you are hiking.
  2. The fabric for your middle layer can have different considerations based upon the adventure that you are planning to undergo.
  3. In frosting temperatures, a heavier fleece can perfectly retain the body heat and keep you sultry.
  4. Keep this layer flexible enough to keep your limbs in action while hiking.

The ultimate outer layer for winters

The outermost layer is the layer with the sole purpose of resisting the entrance of cool wind inside the body. It is worn to bear the extreme cold weather when the temperature is below freezing point. This layer will protect you from rain, wind, snow, and humidity.

  1. A water and windproof jacket is best suited for this layer as it does let the cool wind to seep inside.
  2. A heavy parka can also be used for this purpose but the only drawback it holds is that it is hefty to carry.
  3. Fabrics like polymer, synthetic and a combination of wool and synthetic fibers are well suited for the outer layer as it can handle enough wind and humidity.
  4. While deciding the outer layer make sure that the design of the jacket is such that it is easy to carry (lightweight) and provides maximum insulation from wind and rain so that you can also keep your valuables like mobiles and other gadgets safe in your zipper pockets of the jacket.

  1. Avoid wearing a heavy base layer and long undergarments.

  3. Make sure that you wear subtle and light shades of clothes like pink, white, peach etc. As dark colours easily absorb heat. Do not wear black.
  4. Choose porous fabrics so that you can keep your body ventilated and windy.
  5. Keep yourself protected from sunburn by keeping your hands and legs covered yet airy.
